I don't expect this to do as well as those that actually use water as the subject, but I like the way this turned out. Photo taken using on-camera flash. Used Levels and Color Balance on the entire image to make the colors match my aquarium, and desaturated just a bit to keep them from being too gaudy. Sharpened a bit, then spot edited to tone down some distracting specular highlights.

Thanks to all who left comments. One thing I like about this photo is the way the top of the fish blends into the background and seems flat but the bottom is distinctly three-dimensional. And centering the fish seems to accentuate the effect. But it's nice to know how it is perceived by others, so I really appreciate the comments.

I think a less centered composition would have worked better here, and maybe a background which wasnt so similar in colour to the fish.

looks a bit static, nice colours, but it doesnt give much impression of water

When my friend was a kid, he had a goldfish as a pet. He would take it out if it's tank and 'pet' it every night. Every day, the fish would be dead when he went off to school, and his mom would replace it with a goldfish from the store! This went on for several weeks. It has nothing to do with your image, though, except that it concerns a goldfish! Your shot?" I like the clarity of the water here, and your fish is nicely in focus. I think having the rocks in focus, too, was a good idea. Have you experimented with this fish being off center or on a 'third?'

Should have cropped using the rule of thirds. Flash is a little harsh.

What a nice clean picture. The gold on goldish colors distracts just a bit. But a very nice photo.

The goldfish blends in with the background a little too much. If it wasn't for the great contrast in the shadow I would almost have missed it. I believed you could have blurred out the background with a gaussian blur and still be within the December rules.

Okay, this is a cute goldfish, but as far as I remember, your main subject should have been the water, not the fish inside. A homogenic bluey background would have helped a much here, the fish gets lost among the yellows, browns... The photo is too busy for me this way.

Nice clear photo, which is not always easy with a fish tank. Slightly larger field of view and fish not quite in the middle may have been slightly better though, but I still like it.
