I would have moved the eye up and to the left for this one. What I've found that works good on closeup equine photo's (the short hair) is if on you background copy you really boost the midtone contrast up (~70 possibly) and contrast ~30 and then make that layer's opacity down to around 30 or so, it really makes the different colored hairs stand out.
Horses do make good models. |

Very good composition - great idea. Could use a little brightening to make the eye pop more - so to speak. |

It̢۪s a nice sharp image; compositionally is too centered. Technically is a little too flat. I would try to brighten up the eye just a bit and curves adjustment for the contrast on the rest of the image. |
