Hi Griz, this has tons of potential! Really neat nostalgia shot. Although I don't agree it needs any more sharpening, I don't think you have enough contrast. There's black but really no white - I think Jayson did a great job with processing and adding that extra little thing. Great photo!

For my 2 cents worth, i would move the black slider to about 8 or 10 as the blacks are not prominent for a B&W, go down to the sharpen and boost to about 40, then crop out the sky above the roof line this would then bring your contrast to a more even plain. I f you are not happy with the tone you can then play with the brightness? contrast.
Here is my version. it is hard as I was working with your pixels, from the original would be great.

| Not familier with lightroom, but if possible for me I would burn the non-water parts a bit (like set at 3% or so), and slightly boost contrast. Once again not sure how to do it in lightroom but in PS I might also play with levels just a little. Hope this helps! |

My 2 cents, first off you have a terrific starting point if you like post-processing. If you are going to post, it is best not to have a lot of contrast, because this is easy to add in but very hard to take away. Now one of the issues with this shot there isn't much dynamic light. As such even with post it might feel a little static. Not sure when this was taken, but a couple of streams of light or dappled sun on the house/trees would really lend to the shot.
As far as post, first I would have some brightness to the leaves and some contrast (just to the leaves). Next darken the lake where the house is reflected, just a bit and add some contrast. As for the building itself, just add just a tad of contrast.
Here is a quick 2 minute change with the above I listed using Nikon Capture NX. Not sure how you would go about this in Lightroom or Photoshop.
PS - If you want me to remove the image just let me know. Some people take it personally to the editing of their pictures, but considering the context of the question is seems appropriate.

| What a nice shimmery reflection you've got there - I think it was a good choice to allow it to take up 2/3 of the composition. You might want to play around with your tonal range a bit more, try to get the blacks as deeply black as they can go - and tweak the contrast just a bit more. Honestly I can't tell whether my suggestion would improve or spoil things, but that might be something to play with and see what happens. |
