My second idea, first one didnt really come off. I'll save that for the outtake thread...

Thought I'd put it through a channel mixer for a bit of variety. It's a pink lady if anyone's interested ;-)

Greetings from the Critique Club

Welcome to DPC. Glad to see you parcipating to regularly. It's the best way to learn!

This image has been well critiqued all ready. If you follow taterbug's advice you will have an excellent image when you are done. (And it doesn't hurt to redo a Challenge entry, if you think you can do it better.)

I'll add just one more comment about your image. (well, maybe two). The title is terrific! Then, if it was mine, I'd be a bit more careful in the carving of the symbol. Because it is the star of the show, it should be absolutely beautiful with sure & true knife lines.

Again, welcome to DPC. I'll look forward to seeing more of your work in future Challenges.

Wonderful!!! I would like to see this in color however. Might emphasize the "Apple" part a bit more.

There is a better apple pi phot (in colour)

Nice pi... not sure about the b/w choice here... makes the apple look very unappealing to me.

Great idea but the tones could have just a little more contrast and the scene a little brighter for a better composition.

This is an interesting approach, but the lighting really ruins what could have been a great shot. It appears that you used straight-on lighting (such as an on-camera flash) and that resulted in very flat lighting, a poor shadow around the apple, and the hot spot in the middle. The conversion to B&W just emphasises the flatness of it. Try lighting it from the left side or somewhere between the front and side. The shadow could then become a graphical element of the image, and the roundess of it would work well with the pi theme.

pi hacked out too quick and dirty. I believe if it was more carefully carved, sharper and in color it would have been better.

this would do better if the lighting was better

Would have been better in color, IMHO.

Not quite enough contrast for me. Maybe a different background in order to make the apple pop

Too little contrast. Blurry...

The lighting isn't very good and the image could be sharper.

Creative idea...but the lighting is very dull and gray. It needs a little bit more contrast.

seems pretty uninspired and the elements are disconnected

I'd increase the contrast.

This is a really super idea, I quite like it. I do believe though there are a couple of things holding this photo back though. Mainly, it is very flat, and lacks contrast and 'punch'. Some can be added in editing. Also, good use of lighting during the shoot can make a big difference. Either with lights, or available, natural light, you should make sure the subject is well lit. The composition is ok, and you've nicely isolated the subject by keeping the scene clean and uncluttered, although this particular background and surface isn't 'great', maybe something with just a little texture, or character could be nice for this image. Also, about the lighting, I've noticed with shots of fruit/veggies, etc, that top notch shots avoid glare spots, like you have here. That is a matter I think of just close attention and moving either your light source or subject to avoid this. Another minor thing, is attention to the choice of apple itself. In a shot like this, one should try to find as 'perfect' an apple as possible, see how this one has scratches and such, and not a 'perfect' apple shape? I know, it sounds nit-picky, but the little things add up when trying to achieve the 'wow factor'. Finally, I'm not sure if black/white was the best choice for this image. I can picture it in full color, with nice lighting, and could see it scoring quite high. But maybe that is just me :-) And once again, I love the concept!
