Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Bubbles II (Basic Editing)
Camera: Pentax K100D
Lens: Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF
Location: At home, Sweden
Date: Apr 23, 2007
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/20
Galleries: Traditional Art
Date Uploaded: Apr 24, 2007

For this shot I used a ballon as a bubble. I first tried real gum, but the color was too pale, and the bubble too small (and didn't last long enough to take a good picture...)

Lighting: Indirect light from a window falling in from the left and a 500W light source (a work lamp used for example when you decorate at home, bouncing off a white umbrella, my home made studio ;-) just beside the camera.

Processing:
RAW-conversion, rotate to make the needle horizontal, curves to make the background really white, selective color and hue/saturation to make the bubble really pink, Neat Image, crop, border, save for web.

Thanks again for all comments and votes! I appreciate that you (all of you) take time to comment and to give critique.

Two months ago I had never even heard of DPC, and now I have won two ribbons within a week, thanks to everything I have learned here on DPC!

Yes, I fully agree that the hand in the picture should be a little darker. The skin tones of the face and the hand were different, so I should have compensated it with the lighting. If this wasn't a Basic Editing Challenge I would have fixed it in Photoshop. Another lesson learned here on DPC! :-)

Seems a little too studio/contrived for me, but every one has their style. Still wonderful technicals. Good control of lighting. Nice use of the frame with good use of competing elements (color and lines). The repeating circles (two full circles, plus semi-circle)is a plus. It ends up being a superb entry and very deserving of a ribbon. While it isn't for me, it still would have garnered a high rating from myself because it is quality. Congrats on the ribbon!

Concept and composition combined with lighting and sharpness are the secrets to the success of this image. Great job and welcome to DPC!

This was one of the few tens I cast during the challenge.
I am very happy that it ribboned.
Fantastic image.
Great idea using the balloon.
It looks much better. I didn't even know it was a balloon.
After all, it's still a latex bubble.
=P
Anywho, congrats!
You very much deserve it.

Nicely done.... love the clean background and simple composition. Lighting on the hand seems a bit harsh - would prefer it the tones/ lighting of the hand more closely matched those of the face. But I like it.

What a cute idea, and the execution was nice. The only thing that I think a little destracting is that there is so much white space.

There's a nice story here (the picture is about something). I think the hand is over-exposed. Nice framing.

great idea! and, very well implemented. the color on the bubble is great (did you use a balloon to simulate the gum?). and, the needle looks perfectly horizontal, which makes it a better image.

04/25/2007 03:43:52 AM
Great fun composition, beautifully executed, lips appear a tad unnatural (I am guessing that she wasn't really blowing a bubble), but that only detracts marginally from an image that I feel should be blown up and hanging on a wall somewhere

Great job
