Challenge: Rule of Thirds III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Nikon MF 105mm f/2.5 AIS
Location: Blackwood Farm
Date: Apr 22, 2007
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/350
Date Uploaded: Apr 23, 2007

The Baby horse "Freddy" was born yesterday (21st). Went out to my wife's barn to get a few pictures.

Nothing special about the picture. Probably should have used f4/f5.6 rather than 2.8. Oh well. Contrast added, converted to B&W, non-crop (zero), unsharp mask, and a bit of grain added.

I actually like the slight "motion" blur of the colt. Will people see this as "Rule of Thirds"... Guessing high 5s...

Post Challenge Comments:
One of my goals with any "Rule of Thirds" challenge is to have the rule applied on multiple levels. While I think I managed this to some degree, I also managed to create a photo that was very one dimension (no depth in photo). Next time. This was my first repeat challenge.

Sweet picture, some more practice with the B&W conversion and this will get even better. B&W conversion is still a weak area for me. I hear PS3 has some cool tools for that.

This expresses such a nice mood of tenderness - color version I think would not have been as effective for evoking that mood.

Aww you captured true, natural bonding. They look so much alike with the white patches on their heads. Interesting choice in using black and white.

Such a tender moment captured. I really like how the colt intersects the vertical position of the mother.

Nice example of rule of thirds composition. And the new baby is adorable.

I see this as meeting the rule of thirds on multiple levels, and I really like the picture, too. Very sweet, very touching, and I think the coversion is quite good. Nicely done!

I like the strong verticals and the way the baby cuts across those verticals. 8
