Challenge: Insects II (Minimal Editing I*)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Nikon
Location: Melbourne Zoo Butterfly House
Date: Apr 16, 2007
Aperture: F2.8
ISO: 280
Shutter: 1/60
Galleries: Nature, Animals
Date Uploaded: Apr 15, 2007

Went to the Butterfly Enclosure at the Melbourne Zoo for this. There were some really colourful butterflies and I got some great shots, but I like this for its simplicity. I like the depth of field and the composition and the fact that there was no editing and I still have nice saturation. Oh, but how much did I want to fiddle wth this! I wanted to use levels and all sorts of things to give this a boost.

TAKING THE SHOT: Used my 105mm 2.8 wide open with mt SB600 flash turned down to about minus 1.3. I also used the Lightshere so it gave me just enough light as it was dark and overcast.

EDIT: Sharpen and resize as per rules.

PREDICTION: I am guessing there might be a lot of these, so maybe a 6.2XXX

POST: I guess this did better than I expected, so thanks everyone.

Here is an outtake:

I love the heart on the wing!!! I would have like to see more detail in the wing, but the DOF is wonderful. Outstanding photo!

WOW! That's a wonderful one! It's the first time that I see a butterfly face :)
Excellent depth of field, I only wish I could see both antennas... I like this one better than the outtake, good choice

Very well framed shot. Would love to have a bit more DOF on the wing but still impressive.

Striking colors on that moth(?), magical use of shallow DOF. Focuses the attention on the face nicely, but doesnt's obliterate the wings or the leaf it's perched on. Great job!

Great clarity! I love the mark closest to it's head, it's almost shaped like a heart. Great capture, bumping it up.

And me! I love butterflies. Very nice colour, good pose, very close. I might like to see a bit more DOF and a bit brighter.

Great shot! So tall, and the DOF really helps to emphasize the thinnes of the wings!
