Okay, so I'm cheating here a little bit because I took this one of Tessa a few days ago, on the same day that I shot the day eleven portrait. I have to take advantage of what I can get with her.

Both of my kids have little hideaways of sorts in our backyard. Tessa found a spot between our fence and some hemlocks, and then reinforced the refuge with walls of sticks which she tied together with twine. The floor is made of old slate and moss which she and Daniel found behind the garage. She goes here sometimes to just relax, and sometimes to play with a friend. At this moment she retreated here when she saw me approaching with my camera.

She uses the little glass containers to grind up and store herbal potions that she concocts, a practice that captured her interest last year when she studied colonial times in school.

She is at that age when she still has one foot in childhood, and the other most firmly, decidedly out.

Before I read other peoples comments I was thinking about how much I appreciate getting to know your children through pictures. Sandy really summed it up in what I was thinking. At any rate, and not to sound redundant, thanks for sharing your family with us Erin! Through your portraits of capturing the simple things in life, you have rekindled memories of my own childhood. I always look forward each day to see what you share with us. Keep up your good work.

Poor kid. ;) Looks like a neat place back there. I love your kids' portraits, for showing so many different things about them, but all within a finite number of expressions, relying just on your camera work. Really very touching and multi-layered.

Erin, it is so much fun getting to know your kids! And you as a mom in the process. I am amazed at their imagination and creativity about enjoying childhood. I wish she would savor every second of childhood since it passes so incredibly fast.

What a wonderful story, and a wonderful capture of her. Your description of her having one foot in childhood and one decidedly out says it all in her expression, doesn't it?

It looks to me like you have done a great job with them! Even if she may question that at times when you follow her around with a camera :) I still think one day these photos are going to mean alot to her!

This is lovely, she will love having this moment in years to come when she has forgotten about the days of backyard forts
And I agree with alfresco, her face is so definitively in that moment between child and young woman...beautiful

You have captured Tessa's face as it shows airs of timeless old and knowledge and want and thought. Beauty, life, thought, despair, continuity, age, time - such an expression she has, transcending age and showing the woman she will be. Sanctuary indeed.

Or she's just tired.
