I think your DOF is too shallow here and the bugs got caught in the shallow part....they are not quite in focus and they are hidden by the shadow. Perhaps a different angle would have solved this problem.

I wish you could have done a proper macro with these little guys. the color contrast is great but more light would have made this 'pop'
