Saw this in stdavidson's critique thread and was reminded that I had never got to comment on it, so I'll rectify that here. I voted this a 9, and really liked, as a number of commenters have already noted, the moodiness and mystery of the shot. Not making the people the focus of the image is key to its success for me, as is the lighting. Including the people, however marginally, did have the added benefit of provoking me to "hear" the image - that sounds crazy, but with the strong focus on the cobblestones and background hint at the pedestrians, the image moved me to recall the sound of footsteps on cobblestones. It's not every day an image comes with its own soundtrack!

My only quibble, and keep in mind it is minor - is that one of your pedestrians is carrying a pocketbook that I happen to find somewhat distracting in the image.

I just read some of your comments again and notice someone else noted "hearing" the cobblestones, too. :)

Positives:
Wonderfully conceived and captured black and white. Subtlely moody and gives the viewer much to think about when looking at it. It is the type of image that draws the viewer back again and again. Technical quality is excellent. The immensity of the cobblestones in the frame stuns the viewer.

Technicals:
Black and white contrast and range is just right. Your processing enhances the moodiness of the composition. Backlighting and shadows enhance the composition greatly.

The depth of field on this one is interesting. One of the few images where major subjects like the two people remaining out of focus fits the composition. Generally speaking you'd normally have the closest foreground in sharpest focus but that is not the case here. It is slightly out of focus. Don't know if that is by design. It certainly doesn't hurt the composition and adds a more curiosity to the picture.

The Challenge:
Certainly meets the challenge well and in a unique and interesting way. Commenters obviously like this image a lot and say so. The average score is low, but that is true of most DPC images. Perhaps voters glossed over this one because it lacks the flash and instant "Wow factor" DPC voters have come to expect.

I voted this challenge and gave this image a 9 and probably should have given it a 10. Its one fine image.

Suggestions:
The reason I know I should have scored this a 10 is because I can't think of anything significant to suggest to improve it.

Neat image and idea, but I think I would have used a greater DOF in this one.

Wow. This is very, very cool. I've looked for several minutes, and I just don't know what else to say other than, this is very, very cool. This makes me think J.J. Beguin, and that my friend, is a HUGE compliment from me.

It breaks a big 'rule', with the people cut off, but it works perfect that way. The light is just to die for in the shot. Texture, mood, just wow. The dof works great. It just all comes together, and is just an incredible image. It is just undescribable how this image has grabbed me by my very soul. Going into my favs, and thank-you, thank-you for such an amazing photograph.
