On top of this is some guy on a horse. This probably would have been a good shot for HDR, so I could try to get some detail from the outside too.

To get this kind of shot in camera, I try to do the shooting late in the evening, or right after sunset and use a tripod. I know it isn't always convenient, but it works pretty well for me.
I like that you exposed to get the light on the tops of the arches right.
That must be a darn big horse if it takes all this to hold it up LOL : )
