Long exposure, careful lighting, timed movements, and the occasional stabbed finger - hence I'm using the eraser-end here! ;o)

Wow, my previous best shot was of my right hand, and now my best shot is of my left hand! I must be onto something here ;o)

This shot, as per the details, was done using a very long shutter timing, and was lit solely by an anglepoise lamp reflected off a wall. The timings of the pencil movement took practice to get the right effect, and eventually I found that 3 seconds per 'hit' for the first two and two seconds per hit for the other three worked about right - the dark background meant the pencil didnt need to be there as long as the ones with my arm behind.

Just for the record, I used the JMSetzler 'How did they do that' thingy for his 'Quitting Time' shot to work out how to get the effect, so my advice is for you to read them! :o) Other than that, thank's for your comments and votes, and please PM me if you want further details...

Used to do this in High School (reminds me of the Aliens movie). Terrific use of long exposure. Very creative and difficult to pull off!

Is this a pencil stabbing? It is a very clever picture if it follows the rules of the site. How did you do it?

didn't the original description ask for a yellow pen? j/k. this is a great idea, and it's been very well executed. you easily made it into my top 5 this week. -- gr8photos (10)

I like this! Neat idea for this difficult challenge.

Looks like the effect from shutter speed. I read that this is the image that it produces when you change the shutter speed. I could be wrong, but however it's done, it's a pretty neat effect. If you had done it with the lead side of the pencil rather than the eraser side, it would match up better with your title. the lighting is great and although the hands at the top are kind of strange looking, they are important to the photo. Great job and good luck in the challenge.

Brings back many memories and I like the ghostly blue - adds colour but only sort of...!

good shot, and congrats on getting good skin tone colors. (A lot of times, these kinds of shots get an almost orange look to the skin, i think.) karmat

Interesting photo. Image looks pretty sharp for a long exposure. Lighting is pretty good.

Excellent concept and very very well executed. Hand at the top doesnt distract from the rest of the shot - which I know was tricky to manage. Very very well done.

This is interesting... I'm guessing you did this with a very slow shutter or time delay. Interesting effect. More color or light needed for my taste.

Very nicely done. I had experimented (very little) this week with the slow shutter speeds - to no avail - but will keep trying. Great job! 9

Very creative, not an easy picture. I do not 'like' it in the sens that it does not 'appeal' to me but good job ! 7

How many shots did it take to get that right??? When I did it in school we were dumb and did it with the sharp end. (7)
08/19/2002 05:12:00 PM
That’s cheating you should be using the pointy end. : )
08/19/2002 04:09:00 PM
I TOTALLY forgot about doing this as a child! nice job on subject. a bit dark.... but I like it.
08/19/2002 03:48:00 PM
Anyone can do it with the eraser end!!
08/19/2002 02:16:00 PM
Fun! Like the android on Alien! What a great concept. This must have taken forever to get right.
08/19/2002 01:21:00 PM
nice idea
08/19/2002 12:41:00 PM
Interesting. How did you do that?
08/19/2002 10:27:00 AM
Very creative and nice exposure.
08/19/2002 10:23:00 AM
Nice time lapse! Very interesting picture!
08/19/2002 08:06:00 AM
The pencil looks like beams of light eminating from between the fingers. Interesting shot.
08/19/2002 07:42:00 AM
What, no sharp end first? ....... Yeah, I know it is sorta a useless comment

This is very creative and the photographer 'almost' got it right. The hand is a bit soft on the focus, but still and again, very creative.
