Here's another not-so-famous spot.

This is the Navy-Marine memorial to those lost at sea in World War I. It was dedicated in 1934 and sits in Lady Bird Johnson park on the Potomac River (Lady Bird was President Lyndon Johnson's wife). The site is just across the River from the Jefferson Memorial. Access is from the George Washington Parkway, just north of the 14th Street bridge.

I just learned that it's actually in DC, not Virginia, despite being across the Potomac River from what we normally think of as the capital city. The entire Potomac River belongs to DC, and since this is on an island, it's part of Washington ("Washington" and "DC" are now synonymous, despite the initial setup).

I've driven past it hundreds of times, but never gotten close. Thanks to this project, I stopped for a shot.

This picture shows me how telephoto compresses the distance not only to the camera, but between objects. There's actually about 100 yards between the sign and the memorial, but it looks much closer.

I have no idea who the kid is, but I'm glad he's there for scale. Since the wind was blowing, it was 25 degrees, and you have to walk across rock-hard ice, it's a miracle he was there.

Very nice shot of this! Have to admit I've not seen it before. And yes, the addition of the kid is excellent for scale. It's a beautiful monument!

This is cool! I love the compressed point of view as there are so many different layers of interest.

I grew up in northern Virginia and I have never heard of this memorial. Nice perspective.

Very nice the way you arranged this shot, and good use of the long lens. You must have been a very long way back, and the tree behind makes for a good seperation of the sky and sculpture. Huge DOF.
