I had to change my original entry and go find something else to shoot over concerns that photos of the homeless would be common and voted down.

This one was taken at the Granville Island Public Market, in Vancouver. I was trying to get some shots of some kids chasing the pigeons around, and I noticed this couple sitting on the bench beside me. For some reason, the guy was yelling, despite the fact that they look like they're sharing a romantic moment.

I'm quite proud of my "street shooting technique" on this one: shot from the hip with a fully manual lens. As you can see along the bench, theres not alot of depth of field to play with, and I nailed the focus by guessing. It took a few tries to actually get them in the frame though... and this one is only cropped at the very bottom.

Post processing:
I put alot of effort into this one...
One levels layer, 2 channel mixer layers, and two shadow/highlight layers, along with the standard straighten, resize, sharpen and border.

I have no idea how this will do, but I think its quite good. I'll say a 6 at least, but it really depends on my competition....

----Greetings form the Critique Club!-----

First impression - Good technicals, really good B&W conversion, trash bin pulls attention form the subjects.

This is really good Street Photography technique. The compelling part of the image IMO is his hand on her back. A real moment that doesn't looked staged.

The balance of the shot is a little heavy on the right, and this makes the trash can more of a distraction.

A tighter crop that eliminated the trash bin would also make the hand more of a key element in the composition. The challenge would be to leave enough of the surrounding area in order to keep the street feel.

All in all a really good effort. Any score above 6 is a good score in my book.

I hope this was helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

posthumous, I agree 100% about your take on the garbage can. This photo isn't complete without it. I tried alot of different crops here, and the photo seemed to "need" both the bin and the bench. I wouldn't do it any other way...

This is awesome. You captured such a genuine look of tenderness on that guy's face. The perfect street moment!

very powerful photo. the composition adds intensity to the embrace. I gave this an 8 and would have bumped it higher if I'd gotten back to it.

p.s. the garbage can is perfect. don't you dare crop it out.

This is a nice capture but I find the blurry bench really distracting. Possibly crop in closer? Get rid of the trash can?

Brilliant, if the spirit of photography is all about capturing 'moments' then this moment captures the spirit of photography.
It get's a high 9 from me, 9.5 maybe.

nice emotion captured. i'm surprised you didn't crop way down square to just get the couple and remove the end of the bench and the trashcan. i don't think you needed those objects to show "streetness"...this really isn't a "street" type of shot anyway, because the environment seems to not be interacting with your subjects at all.

I like. Too bad the garbage can is there, but sometimes you gotta live with that stuff I know.........7

You can actually see so much in his eyes, even though they're closed.
