Photographer’s Notes
I am not good at this Street Photography stuff. But I’ll give it a go.

The title was inspired by a comment my grand mother made in her nineties. Although in reasonably good health, she was bored with life. Deeply religious, she said she was waiting to die to see what he next life would bring.

Confess to an ambivalence about the title - was able to allow for the possibility of something like your explanation, but it still didn't sit right. There are so many interesting and contrasting facets to this photo that it does require the mind to pay attention, so much so that it is one of those rare photos worthy of "untitled."

Having read your notes after the challenge, I can now understand the title. It was, as said below, a little harsh with no notes to explain it.

I don't much like the title, but I think the photo is very well done. She has a practical expression that you captured well.

Horrendous title for a wonderful picture. Gotta take a point off for that title. I'll give you an 8.

what an awful title. she seems to me like she's kind of active.

The most ignorant and stupidest title I've seen in a while. That's a shame because the photograph is interesting and good.

Good shot but i think the title is a little on the harsh side. Nice effort

I don't really care for the title. While her life might be long I am not sure it applies to her. Unless of course you know her personally.

strange, i get the opposite feeling when i look at this. like she's doing everything in her power to continue on her own...even if it means walking with 2 canes.

that is a terrible title - I hope someone doesn't feel the same way about you when you're that age

I like the picture, but not the caption, kind of ruins the picture for me.

I love the shot, but imo the title doesn't fit AT ALL. She doesn't look like she's waiting for anything, let alone death. She's striding right out, looks determined to live for years yet!

Quite harsh title. Just commenting - no voting.

I don;t like the title, but I don't score lower for it. I like the contrast in the color of her shawl or sweater with the colors of the wall.

Like everything but the title ...

I think the title is somewhat disrespectful of your subject...

Interesting your perspective about this lady, as you expressed in the title, which I disagree.
The image conveys life and fight for life - not death - in inspite of the age!
Maybe you know something else about her or her situation (not shown by the image), but this is a good example on how a bad tile can drag down a good image... (imho, of course).

i bet you that you're being voted down becuase of the blurry leg, correct?
well i like it, even if others say its out of focus.

The title is very depressing - I don't like it, but as this is a photo challenge, I'll judge on the photo: very nice composition and capture of the moment.

Love the location and the way she very much contrasts with it - she's well dressed, pays attention to her appearance (and I don't get the idea she's waiting to die, but I don't put much stock in titles.) The figure itself, however is oversharpened to the point the "halos" are visible to me and I usually don't notice that stuff. I realize that DPC instills a manic need for supersharp, clear images, but this is one time when softness would have been just fine. After the challenge you may want to redo this one and let it be soft.

I really don't like your title. I'm giving you an 8 because I like the photo, but that title is just, well, just...words escape me. I would like it even better with some more space in front of her. I also like the slight blur of her front foot indicating motion.

Not sure the subject would applaud your title...it's a striking image though.

I strongly dislike the title, which seems to me to be demeaning: how do you KNOW she is "waiting to die"? It's like you're imposing your perception on the viewer, trying to steer him in a certain direction. The image does not require this; it stands very well on its own, it's a strong image.

Interesting character in a very interesting environment. Although I can see where she's coming from (and really like the two windows behind her) I'm left wondering where she's going to as she's heading straight out of the frame. However, that does work for this shot as it sets up a bit of a questionmark about this anonymous character.

Just a great shot, love the right foot, it must have been really moving. Haha... but honestly love the color and the composition here. A great angle also. Kind of a harsh title. But Well done.

Oooh, brutal title! I wonder what she's like. Oh, and the photo itself is quite effective. Some might criticize the fact that she's walking off the page, so to speak, and suggest more room on the left for her to "walk into". If you get such comments, I disagree with them. I think that her position in the frame lends a sense of tension that I think you intended. ...As if the photo communicates that most of her life is behind her. Nice work.

what your image says, and what your title says could not be further apart

02/19/2007 07:26:13 AM
I think there is a certain disconnect here between the picture and its title. A picture of an older woman walking does not convey to me an idea of waiting and especially of waiting to die. I think the title is meant to add a bit of impact to an otherwise decent shot, but has an opposite effect, at least to me...(6)
