Carl’s popularity can be traced back some 60 years to 1947, when Carl’s first started serving the public. Carl’s has become so popular, that some travelers passing through Fredericksburg on the Interstate will stop by just for some Ice Cream. Carl’s serves 3 tasty flavors of frozen custard, (yes, custard - custard contains more eggs than ice cream), chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.
The custard is made in 120 gallon batches from a rare 1940 era Electo-Freeze Ice Cream machines. You can see the actual brightly polished chrome machines churning out ice custard when you visit.
Another unique feature for Carl’s Ice Cream is that the Ice Cream does not come out of the machines swirled, twirled or twisted. The frozen custard slowly exits the Electro-Freeze machines down a chute in a flat rectangular shape (about four inches wide and one inch thick), into the freezer where your ice cream is scooped from. //www.simplyfredericksburg.com/offpath/carls.shtml

How nice that it is still open after all these years! They are open, so it's almost spring, right?

Interesting! And it looks to be a take-out only? It looks like the guy is ordering from outside.

That's such an interesting story! It looks like even now, there's quite a line for the ice cream. They must have their car heaters turned up to be nice and snug and cozy.

This is a charming place, illustrated very well in your photo!

Ice cream with all that snow around - FORGET IT!

I'd like to try that frozen custard though - I like custard.

I love little homey places like this. We have one called "ammons's." great shot and that is interesting about how they make the custard.

A nice bit of Americana, and I love the history you wrote. We have a place like this in the next town, called Ashford Drive-In, but unlike Carl's, they are still closed. Too bad you can't get inside there and get some shots of those old machines. Might make for some great vintage or history shots.

Very cool history. Thanks. It makes me chuckle to see people in line to buy ice cream (oops, custard) with that much snow on the ground. Must be some really good stuff. :)
