Local common name is "iron head" for this bird, which is actually a wood stork. Their numbers dwindled to about 5,000 a few years ago, but there are more of them now, as I see them often, and usually in bunches.
This one was standing alongside the road this morning, so I turned around, changed lenses, set everything for a rolling capture, and eased back to where he was for the shot. Most birds that do not fly when you drive by will allow you to roll slowly up to where they are, and watch you for about 3 to 5 seconds while they decide if they are going to fly or not. If you are ready, you can take advantage of the small time window to get this kind of shot. Manual focus and prefocused for the expected distance, using shutter priority metering works best.
Zoom at 220 mm UV filter only.
