The view down Penn from 13th St. My office is on the 2nd floor of the building on the right, pretty much directly below the peaked roof that appears to be just to the right of the large tower.

My building used to be the US Post Office's headquarters, and boy, did the Postmaster General have a lavishly decorated office! The most interesting story is that the Hope Diamond once passed through our building. They kept it in a plain, unmarked package.

The tower is part of the Post Office Pavilion, formerly one of their office buildings. It's now operated by the National Park Service. Everyone crowds around the Washington Monument (out of sight behind and to the right of this image), but to me, this tower provides the best viewing value. There are never any lines and it's open to the air instead of tucked away behind windows. Corner of 12th St. and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.

As you can see, it's 12 blocks to the US Capitol from here, and the White House is 4 blocks behind me. Sadly, this means that terrorist threats are never far from our minds.

Note from a few days after posting: I looked again yesterday and the Capitol really IS that white, esp. compared to the other buildings.

How in the world did I miss this photo????? I just looked at your photo of the frozen Potomac and you mentioned the post office tower from day 4, which I didn't remember seeing, so here I am. I was up in the tower and it does have great views but those wires are annoying! I couldn't get any good photos from there at all. I didn't go up in the Washington Monument, didn't want to line up and wait.

I might choose a slightly narrower crop from the top just to give the buildings a little bit more prominence And a slightly wider feel to the actual Avenue.

edit: cuz I'm an idiot and Jeff knows it. ;-)

I've seen this view! Nice shot showing the way the capitol really does stand out amidst the gray.

This is so amazing! I love the stories you write. It's such a different world than where I live. But one literally steeping with history and nobility. For some reason, this typical urban looking photo of "real life" D.C. makes me want to go visit it even more than the fabulous glam photos that make it seem almost unreal. This makes you feel like what you would feel like if you were there!

I just LOVE IT!

You have a great voice, both to your text story telling and in your image, and though your images can stand on their own, the text adds something beyond a simple "here you have a" type text; I'm looking forward to seeing more of your images and reading more of your stories.

Traffic looks fairly light for where you are. Washington is a place full of history and intrigue. Good write up with the image.

Pretty cool how the Capitol Building is so bright that it stands out in the distance.
