I love love love this photo. She looks like she is carrying an immense burden, something so heavy that it has caused her to become almost purely a shadow. The child and his sled are one creature, a centaur, smugly looking back, vivid red, perhaps it is the mother's life that infuses this creature, makes it glow. The composition is great. Mother is a powerful vertical shape, child is a decisive triangle, and a strong diagonal in the middle of the picture skates over top the triangle and goes right through the vertical. The OOF shapes up-top are just enough to give a sense of context without distracting. It's important to know that this is a suburban setting. Did I mention I love this?

This would be a perfect entry into partial desat :-) That curving line of shadow in the middle adds an extra artistic touch. There's a feeling of grief or sadness emoting from the woman, and the boy looks wise beyond his years. Very well done.

How perfectly wonderful! I so want to have a ride :) Love the desat. Your choice to leave the red (and yellow?) leaves it looking realistic and allows the viewer to wander lazily around this magical moment (if we could tear our eyes away from the gorgeous child) to other points of interest. Excellent work.

First thought - the woman has no head. Second thought: lucky kid. I like the lack of color but the puller is featureless and headless. Intentional? Not sure but a little jarring. Haven't figured out if it is in a good way yet - the title opposes - that is, I would expect a warm and fuzzy feeling rather than a distant one from the mother and home part.

Wonderful shot, i love the expression too. The desat looks great and really draws you to the kids fantastic expression.

I love the single saturation of red. The kid's expression is wonderful.

Nice job with the white balance in the snow, its hard to properly expose in snow when trying to get a candid shot like this one. Good use of the cleared pavement in front of them to create a diagonal to add depth to the photo. I think the composition is good as neither of them are centered and the boy is on the lower 3rd horizontal.DOF maybe could have been a bit deeper to keep the mothers hat in focus, but it really doesnt make a difference.

I like the colorations and tonalities of this photo, it has an overall feel of B&W throughout the contrasts of the photo but has the boy in red as if a selective desaturation was done. This photo shows you have a very good eye for composition, know your camera and that you look for things that stand out or are different in your world.

Nice Job.

Wonderful. I love the mom turned heading forward, with the kid looking back. Great pop of red too.

I love it.
I love that without any desaturation you've managed to use that tool to great effect. Great eye contact with the boy, and lovely composition.

Looks too well set up to be a candid, :P
