Thank you pccjrose for your comments. That is exactly what I needed know. I was very happy with this shot and was taken a back by the score. I see what your are talking about though. Thank you.

Here are a few thoughts about your image (by the way I gave it a 5 during the challenge - Not a bad image at all, just not a great image that says wow or tells me a story).

First of all, the image is rather static - the main subject is in the center of the image.

Second, the lighting is not very dramatic - the background is dark and the marbles seem to get lost in it. I would imagine this would have worked much better to show the colors on the marbles (mostly dark blues and reds, etc) on a bright background with bright lighting.

I do think you did a nice job of conveying shallow DOF - the focus on the marble in front is pretty good, but the darkness makes it hard to tell on quick glance

Though the detail in the marbles lends well to shallow DOF, the main marble seems a bit too central with the blank forground not adding much to the image. Bringing the marble formation down in the frame and adding a bit more light to the foremost marble I think would help a lot.

Nice DOF!! :) That's what this challenge is all about and this photo is a great example! Nice that you have the primary colors up front and middle and the assortment of colors in the blurred area. Nice arrangement and focus. Love the warm wood with the crack leading to the marbles. Very pleasing and natural. Hope this does well.
