Just in case anyone's coming back to their comments... bingo to HBunch for getting the intent of the photo. Admittedly, I was on the beach for a week with my 4 nephews and neice in South Carolina. We went out building sand castles one day, and I took a ton of photos. The three verticals in this shot (even though the framing was slightly off -- couldn't crop any more from the right without losing the suit and ending up with a torso floating in from right) kept bringing me back to it, and I let the stopped action and nice arch speak for itself. The DOF was throughout my test shots, using the camera's macro mode for a close-up of the pencil-flag. No screen or anything so technical was involved. The height of the tower in which the pencil was placed and the distance from the tower to the kids translated to the photo. Too bad the tower's molded topography crumbled a bit when I inserted the pencil.

Thanks for all the comments -- on to the next one.

I have mixed emotions on choice of DOF, might have looked to sharpen the boy up either completely or a bit, but that's just my take...

Nice dof choices... Interesting colors and composition... nothing really grabs me, however. 5 sjgleah

Nice set-up of the background on this one.

Wow, I love a lot about this image. The composition and DOF are the most striking elements. It's odd though that it doesn't really appeal to me visually despite these things. I appreciate your vision.

Reminds me of the Volkswagon dome shape commercials. Good DOF.
This works well!

Nice DOF use. I see some graininess between the mound with the pencil, and the background beach/kid. Is this a screen?

School's out. I'm going to the beach. and I don't need this pencil. It would make a nice flag pole on top of my castle. I like it. I also like the 3 vertical objects in this. The shovel, pencil and arm. Love the natural light and your framing is great. Godd job and good luck in the challenge.

good composition ...I like the sharp foreground in contrast to the fluid, soft background.

Although I kind of wonder what the pencil is doing there, I do like the shape of the boy's body and spade, and the use of DOF. The way the background frames the foreground is something I haven't seen used this well before and for that I am giving this slightly higher.
