I find myself on another business trip to DC when a challenge is due....so out to look for a subject. This was taken at the carousel on the mall. Tough panning subject as it is not only moving from left to right, but they also move up and down. After about 100 shots, this is what I chose as the best. I am adjusting it on my laptop so hope the colors aren't too far off.

I love this image. Many people have a particular mind-set when approaching a challenge subject. I think this fit outside their mind set. Their bad, not yours. The composition, the colors, the motion, all set this image apart from most others. You did a great job. BTW - next time you're in DC, drop me a line we can go out shooting...

Note: I want to thank you all for the comments. I would like to point out that I assure you this was panned. It was a tele lens at 1/4 second. If you look carefully just above the girl's head, I cropped off a distracting light that was stretched across a large part of the picture giving you an idea of how much this was panned. I left a little of it just so I didn't have to crop her head too much. I really enjoy these kind of shots.

i totally agree! Jeileen, there's definitely motion panning here, otherwise the degrees of blurness wouldn't be different between the foreground and the background. Although the perception of beauty is a very individual thing, holding fast to hard rules is not what makes photography exciting.

I might just be inexperienced, I haven't been at this photgraphy thing very long, but IMO this shot meets the challenge beautifully. The foreground is certainly separate from the background. I have not read that the foreground must be in crisp focus for an image to truly be motion panning but judging by the scores in this challenge that is the very narrow perpective held by the majority of voters. Lovely colors and composition. Feels so delicate and like a painting. Back to bump you up to 8.

I do not see panning here - If so some part of the picture would be in focus, like the little girl's face.

Subject needs to be frozen, not so blurry.

Quite lovely, in my humble opinion. Soft, sweet, nicely composed, and the colors work well in this.

Good art shot, I love the total motion but I suspect the voters might not like it as much

Charming. The blur of the subject adds to the fantasy.

nice topic, but needs a little work on the execution. don't get me wrong, i love the image--i just don't think it meets the challenge that well.

You're on the right track - this would have been lovely with at least the little girl's face in focus. Call me unartistic if you must, but I need to see SOMETHING in focus for it to work as a motion panning shot.

you should have use either higher ISO or little bit faster shtter speed, it would have come nice.

Delightful image. A lot of motion blur as well as motion panning which is a shame 'challenge' wise. But a really lovely picture regardless.

Lacking clarity of the subject.
