 Assembled in my basement after painstakingly sharpening numerous pencils to the appropriate length, and then re-doing the whole thing after my wife pointed out that the state was originally too wide ("It's reaching well into New Jersey!")

Oops. Actually I thought that it was a wordplay on Transylvania and the pencils resemble lots of peg's (these things which are used to kill vampires). The framing by green wood somehow backed that up (in my weird mind).
I think a lot of people had problems recognizing this as the state Pennsylvania because they aren't from the US.

To those who "didn't get it..." I live in Pennsylvania, so these are pencils shaped like our fine state. I didn't realize there were so many people who had no idea what the state looked like (or perhaps didn't take a moment to look at the title?). :)

Ehhh are you referring to pennsilvania? how? is this a flag of some kind or... mmm i feel stupid for not getting this picture, maybe it's because i'm not american?

I didn't know what shape Pennsylvania (sp?) is, but I am willing to take your word for it. I like the idea of a map made from pencils rather than drawn with pencils.

This cracked me up beyond belief. I wasn't sure exactly what "pencil-vania" looked like, so I looked it up and you are right on!! Couldn't have followed the states outline better. Never having been to Penn. I can only assume that the branches and leaves around the pencil state are something relating to Penn. Great imagination! definately creative and guess what? I see pencils!! Good luck in the challenge.
