This is my first challenge entry. I owed my friend Jess a portrait (I lost it as a poker bet), and she suggested I submit it.

To convert to black and white from the color original, I used The GIMP's channel mixer. I set the RGB values to 30, 59, 11 (respectively), and checked monochrome (but not preserve luminosity). Then I shrunk the image down for size, and that's it.

I realized later that with the aperture set to 1.8 (for short depth of field), in the sunlight I really needed to have set the ISO to 100, but by then my toddlers decided the photo shoot was over.

Nice composition and model, but full sun will kill you on B&W. Try shooting under the shade of a tree or umbrella or wait for a cloudy day for much softer skin tones and controllable whites.

Nice bokeh but a bit too much contrast and sharpening? ...

the DOF is really nice - good bokeh - but I think the image is just a little too blown out on her face and blouse
