First of all, I want to thank my wife LeeAnn for dropping numerous sugar cubes for me. Believe me, this is much harder than it looks. By the time we were done I could say:

"Want a little coffee with your sugar"?

It's nowhere near as good as other DPC members have done, but it's my first attempt.

Bob, what a hoot!!!! This one, though it has no real grab you in the gut wow factor, is a really good pic! The DOF is absolutely super, the lighting is good, and the timing on the sugar cube......well, all those tries paid off, it's PERFECT!!!!!

It's definitely a good first attempt! I haven't found the time necessary to devote to doing this yet.

I agree with everyone about cropping tighter and softening the light.

For a first attempt (and a lot of sugar cubes) I'd say you did pretty darn well! I'm betting that you'd have scored about a half point higher if you'd cropped a lot closer - get more detail of the splash and the sugar cube. (Just read through the comments and I see this has already been suggested... probably should read first, huh?)

"Sweet" capture of the sugar and splash, very sharp ... the rim of the cup would look better if the hot spots were cloned out, actually a plain cup or mug would be less distracting from the real action.

A good choice of subject, and great timing on the sugar cube drop. Ways to get a better score....On camera flash is pretty harsh, especially from so close, and it takes away any sense of depth to the shot. You definitely need softer light. Even tracing paper placed over the flash will help. Since the focus should be on the sugar cube, do everything you can to put the focus there. Get rid of extra detail, the patterned cup, the wood grain table. Get a plain cup, and sit it on top of a piece of dark paper. Another thing would be the focus. I'd like to see the whole top of the cup in focus.

This would have been cool much closer with a clear glass mug.

you must be really obsessed about splashes :)

Wow fab capture. The drop and flash are great - I just think a different colour mug would have worked better. Still keeping it light but the only white in the pic I think should have been the sugar

Hey. I just saw one of these a minute ago. :D Their's was a big splash, yours is a little splash. Hmmm. I think with the smaller splash you're losing some impact with all of the surrounding distractions. I would have cropped this in substantially and shown off that nice arc on the left side of the splash. The coffee cup is dirty - from prior attempts maybe? All JMO of course. :P Good luck in the challenge.

This is the best of the Sugar shots! I think it's because i love "splash" shots :P Well done, the picture is nice and sharp where it's supposed to be :)

Ha, that is the second take of that idea. Pretty good, though the other is just a tad better to me. The light is a bit harsh on that cup?

Love the literal representation ;] And I especially love how sharply you've captured the moment of impact. I think with a little better lighting and maybe a little closer of a crop this could be a really great image.

I wonder if you struggled with how close to crop in on this? I think if you had enough resolution in the image, you could have cropped in very close to show the detail on the cube and the liquid around it - the cup detracts a bit, IMO. The capture is fantastic though.

Yeah, I was sure there would be a literal representation of this one. It's funny. Nice capture of the action, but I think the composition could have been worked out better. Maybe a tighter crop to get more impact out of the sugar hitting the liquid. Or maybe just cropping off the top third, to establish the centre of attention away from the middle of the pic where it is now to a better focal point.

Great splash - I think it would have been a stronger image with a tighter crop.

Wonderfull timing! I don't like the rest of the picture though. Maybe you should've cropped out most of the background.
