 I thought the fern reaching into the frame of the dry mudbed really juxtaposed two extremes one could face in this desert environment.

I adjusted the color balance, curves, and smart sharpened.

Lovely idea! The juxtaposition of green/mudbed is very good. So is the composition overall. I do not know what F-stop you used, but it looks a bit like the mudbed is every so slightly blurry - in this case I think it would work really well if both the branch and the mud were perfectly in focus, clear. I think, if it were me, I'd also try to work on creating a bit more drama, less soft colours, more strength - it's a great situation for a "strong" picture (IMO).
