Fought with this challenge for ages - tried all the standards: bowls, jugs, plates of fruit and vegetables, autumn leaves, and then I was peeling a potato for dinner, and had a thought ...

... still don't know if this is the right one to submit, but it is at least different from the orthodox, and I have a small tradition of slightly odd photographs now, so I'd better live up to it.

There's another version which is much more punchy tonally (a lot of work with curves) and more contrasty, but I've decided I like the play of light and tone here, so this is the submission.

Nothing clever lighting-wise: indirect sunlight through a blind, which acts as a great big difffuser. Pinned the peel back together and put it on a piece of white paper. Pleased with the texture in the paper, too.

are you planning on revisiting this ;-)

Thanks for all the comments, as ever - all much appreciated. Unusually, I'll go so far as to say the comments about the light are plain wrong - with a more even light the depth, texture and mood of the image would be ruined. Anyhow, it IS an even light, it's just from one direction only - or one area only, perhaps.

Unique and imaginative, almost voodooesque. ;-)
The needles alone are a jazz, compositionally.
The light is a little dim, perhaps, on the right. What do you think?
The title, too, is nice and dry, avoiding the trivial.

The subject, to me, is a work of art, the image a photo documenting it.
In my book: subject 10, photo 5 > opus 7.

what a work of sculpture! I like the staples and pins. Wish you had light coming from the right too - it is a bit too shadowy there.

very creative idea!! lighting could be a little better to remove shadows but you get extra points for creativity! 9

Interesting idea and an interesting combination of shapes, texture and angles. Other than to take a picture, why would anyone want to reconstitute a potato?

Cool concept. Decent execution. I don't know what it is about his picture that makes me want to give it a 7 instead of an 8.

Interesting concept. Very good closeup of the potato skin. You can almost feel the texture of the skin. Lighting is very good. It helps highlight the pins. "10"

Interesting--for some reason, it reminds me of a Salvidor Dali painting.
