 In the end I didn't enter this into the brown challenge, though I was close to it. I figured it would probably pull in about 4.5 and just wasn't happy with it.

This is actually a close-up of a flake. It looks a lot like kebab meat, I think. The focus was not quite right, but then nothing about the setup had worked. The original intention was to have two flakes on a line running from the frame, with shallow DOF. I took about 20 shots of that and nothing was right. boo.

What's a flake? It looks sugary. I think you are right that it wouldn't have scored very well -- the focus isn't good enough for most voters. Also I think they like to be able to identify the object. It's a nice brown and the lighting is good.
