Just to answer some questions...
ellamay: the pelican is actually in sunlight, rather lucky that day I think, having the light at a fairly good angle
f=32: haha, I was thinking of the title 'yearning to be a swan', but thought it was unsuitable, perhaps too explicit.... |

| Composition is good, the lighting/exposure is good, the details are nice and sharp, although I think the pattern of his.. whatever you call the thing under his beak.. makes it seem a little out of focus. Obviously the two light smudges on the dark background are a little distracting, but I realise for DPC there is nothing that can be done for them. Nice close-up shot. |

| Very good depth of field. The main subject is really separated from the background. The contrast in the feathers are incredible. The shadows in the feathers really help to separate them. Love the subtle color changes in the beak. |

| A real test of control of DOF unfortunately the eye and the small crest are just a little OOF but otherwise a great shot 7 |

| I have been spending a lot of time with birds lately and I have begun to find them fascinating (vs my pre-photography view which was indifference). I think you have done a great job capturing this one, though I am curious about the lighting it does not look like sunlight, is he in a zoo or something what kind of lighting did you use to bring out his details? VEry nice job! |

| This is a cool shot. I have never seen a pelican up close. The colors are subdued and natural looking as well. |
