This challenge came up and I remembered a thread that talked about this type of image. I tried a rough version out in front of our house just to see how hard it would be to create.

Conclusion - easy as pie. Later on that day I drove downtown with the kids just as the sun was setting.

Hope people like this one - it was exciting to create and since it is only Saturday I have to wait til Thursday for any kind of validation. Arrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

:::Critique Club Here:::

First Impression: How on earth did he do that. Glad you had an explanation. Just a great photograph.

Technical: 10 The exposure looks good and so does the whole composition though they say never to place its directly in the center in this case it works very well because of the "world" "round" feeling.

Appeal: 10 Very nice image to look at. Each section or building makes me want to go round in circles twisting my head like a dog.

Challenge: 7 This is the one area that though there is sky its hard to tell that its the sky and not just a blue background. This I would not say is the photographers fault too bad there it was'nt blue sky cloudy day. This would have really changed the outcome of this photograph.

Title: 10 The title really compliments the overal subject that being the roundness of the world.

Overall: 9 What do they say "everyone is a critic" Hope this helped.

I really struggled with this one and the other "in the round" shot, trying to decide how I felt about keeping things "photographic." I really like both images, but this one still feels more like a photo, albeit a heavily distorted one. On the other hand, the sky here is merely a bland background, not really a "key" element. Balancing it all out, I'm giving this a 5. In a free study with expert rules, I'd probably give this a 7 or 8.

there is another photo in this challenge with the same effect. your world is just as good, but their sky is better. So they get a 10, and you get a 9.

Very creative and interesting to look, but definitelly the sky is not your focal point here. I don't mean this is a DNMC, though.

I think your world is very cool. Of course there's going to be some negative voting on this one but for me, it falls nicely within the spirit of the challenge. Nicelty executed.

12/16/2006 11:32:37 PM
I don't think the main emphasis is the sky but I like it anyway. Well done

Honestly, my second favorite in the challenge. Love your use of fisheye here. Excellent work in the post. You've chosen the subject well. I even like the inclusion of the truck. Pretty cool! 10

Returning for comments. I gave your photo a 7 but to be honest I would have probably scored it higher had it not been for the other one like this in the challenge. Your shot while perfectly executed doesn't have quite the impact the other had emotionally or compositionally. However, having said that I do expect you to either ribbon or come very close. Good luck.

Great editing! My only problem with this is that the sky in not prominent in the photo. It seems more like a wonderful setup on a blank background. Some nice dramatic clouds would have been wonderful but I'm sure would have caused some editing problems.

I don't see the sky here as a key element. Instead it just seems to be negative space. Perhaps if there were more variation in the sky (clouds in different places) it would be a different story. Overall I do like this shot - I saw a thread a while back linking to examples of this, and I have to say yours ranks right up there with what I've seen.

edit: I was thinking about it a bit more... I think the main problem is not the negative space thing. A "key element" does not have to be a subject - I felt that way when I first wrote the comment but I have changed my mind on that. I do still think though that this image does not say "sky" to me. That is really probably a combination of two things: one, I am not used to seeing a sky presented in this way (surrounding the earth like that) and two, there are no clouds really, nothing to say sky except the colors of blue and white presented in what looks to be a vague "gradient" fashion. The first thing I cannot penalize you for, but the second I can. I think if you had chosen to shoot on a day where the clouds were throughout the sky instead of just low to the ground it would have helped a lot.

The main thing is, I am bumping your score a bit because of my revised thinking, but at the same time it is not the score I would give to this same image in a free study.

This is a very inventive and enjoyable photo, well constructed and presented. My only issue is relevance to the topic. While the sky borders the world, if I didn't know the challenge was for "sky" I never would have guessed it. Still, I view my issue as one of interpretation and emphasis, and I never vote down another artist's work on that basis. I like the image. (7. When I finish voting I may come back and bump it to 8.)
