Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Death (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D70s
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
Location: Den
Date: Dec 4, 2006
Aperture: f:8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 77sec bulb
Galleries: Studio, Persuasive
Date Uploaded: Dec 4, 2006

The technique used to produce this image is similar to the one used by labuda to take his picture 'X-rays'and it is described here: //www.dpchallenge.com/how.php?HOW_ID=34

My technique was a bit more complex as I used a real 3-d model of a hand skeleton (instead of a flat picture of it), my split screen is diagonal rather than straight vertical at the midline, and, most noticeably, my camara (Nikon D70S) cannot take double exposures, therefore, I had to work a large portion of the 77sec (total duration of the exposure) in darkness.

I used manually triggered flash bursts bounced against the ceiling for the 2 exposures. The correct flash settings were arrived at beforehand by trial and error. The skeleton was exposed first, in total darkness and with the upper left triangle shielded, the shutter was left open. Still in darkness I covered the lens with its cap and turned the shield 180 degrees, lights are now turned on for alignment of the model's hand (with the skeleton removed)using previously placed landmarks (pin heads). A helper, who is unfortunately (for him) a smoker lights up the cigarette and places it between the model's index and middle fingers, lights go off, lens cap is removed, second flash burst comes on, shutter is closed...done.

This is a very compelling image. It should be picked up by the anti-smoking people for a poster shot and posted in every school in the nation.
I read how you did this, and see that you had a plan, and worked around your D70's limitations brilliantly.
Great job technically, and insightful concept. It should have placed at least top 10 if not top 3. Excellent!

Man, I gave this shot a 9. I can't understand those low ball votes. I guess some people don't understand the message that says DO NOT VOTE LOW FOR SHOTS THAT YOU THINK BREAK THE RULES. Maybe they are simple and cannot process that information, so think "DUHhhhh, 3" or similar. Who can say? Definitely deserved more for that degree of work and for getting a noise-free image over that exposure (though obviously we voters wouldn't know the exposure time).

I gave it a 9, very well executed. I really don't understand how you could have gotten 89 votes 5 or below. Maybe folks voted low before it was validated? I did that once when I first joined and appolgized to the photographer and learned to let the council do it's job and vote for the photo as is.

Well, I can see the velvet's folds, but still, cleverly done, especially the toning into sickly flesh.

As I light up a cigarette *grin*.......the image is of death, but I have ask....was this a double exposure, or has it been altered? Seems like some black in the wrist area, could appear as having been altered????
