Being a little sneaky here. The subject which is the Baby plant is light green. That's predominately a "light" colour. But given it's lack of contrast, I've used the dirt to help bring out the Baby Plant.

:)

When I look at this picture the thing that draws my eye is the dirt, not the plant. To me, the subject is the dirt, even if your title says otherwise. This may have worked better if the plant dominated the picture instead of the dirt.

I like your idea, I would have liked to see the dirt maybe in greyscale, but nice shot non the less...

nice idea, but the image should speak for itself, maybe softer focus on soil and sharper focus on leaf.

If only the dirt didn't look like poop. ;)
Maybe if you had replaced the dirt with fluffy white cotton?

Despite your title, I can't help but feel that the dirt is more visually dominating.

You might be thinking the plant is the subject, but I would disagree. There is a lot of dirt, and it does not lead me to look at the plant. Sorry, but not only is this too far OOB for me, it doesn't work well as a photo either. The composition would probably be fine if the dirt were lighter and the plant darker.

If you ahve to explain the shot with your title then you proabably won't score very high.

I would argue that in such an instance that the dirt is the subject. It keeps pulling my eyes to it. It is the ol' the darkest thing in a high key image is the subject, and the lightest thing in a low key image is.

...just a thought...if the dirt is not to be seen as a subject then maybe it should not be included within the image...perhaps if you had put the tiny plant in a little white vessel of some kind, thus hiding the offending dirt, the explanatory "title"/viewer intruction would not have been needed...

The soil is an unattractive orange. I hate your title. Otherwise the composition and subject had a modicum of potential.
