I actually think the soft focus and the dark color tones work well here to set the mood. Don't worry about the DNMC, bc as you know, most people only look at a photo for a few seconds when voting in a challenge.

As far as the composition...it bothers me a little that the top rose (what's left of it) is directly above the main subject. I would prefer it to be slightly off to the left, and then you could crop the photo so that both roses were on the thirds.

I understand your frustration with the challenge.
This is a lovely image for hanging on a wall. I would agree with the comments that it doesn't meet the post card challenge. Because, think about the purpose of a post card... They are sent to people you left behind on your vacation that says 'wow, this place is great, wish you were here!'
This doesn't meet that expectation.

It is a sad and gloomy image that has a great background and soft lighting and colors. The 'story' is a sad dispair kind of a feel. Sometimes, we need to set our own personal sentimental opinions aside and look at it from another perspective. (the beauty of dpc comments btw) This would make for a wonderful "get well" card, or "missing you" kind of card. Its a wonderful image that has its own purpose.

At first reaction, it's not an image that screams, "Look at me!" It's more of an image that grows on you, maybe even one that has a personal history, one where you might have a connection to the image that the rest of us can only guess. That's probably too much.

As for it being in the "Postcard" challenge, it doesn't scream postcard in the stereotypical definition of postcard. Card yes, but not postcard. That's probably the biggest reason why people didn't appreciate it during the challenge.

As for the image itself, the technicals seem fine, and the composition is OK also. It's an odd picture in a way, the gentle, light colours of the rose against the dark, broody fence, the dark dead rose crossing over in front and then behind the young rose, a picture of contrasts in a way. I think you're right, it probably makes a beautiful print. What's funny is that images that look good on the net don't necessarily make good prints (and the other way around too).

I hope this helps a tad.

Sorry, this is my first "did not meet challenge" vote. They don't have to be travel advertsiements, but in the title you could've told us what the point of the card would be. Sympathy after a death? Reminder of spring? Faded but still going? What?

Looking at it purely as a photo, it's out of focus and quite low in contrast. Maybe rotating it so the dead head is in the upper left and the bloom is more centered might increase the visual interest.

This doesn't work as a postcard.

This is nice, but doesn't really remind me of a postcard.

I don't think this image have any potential for a postcard. I'm sure you can do a much better job

The background is very distracting.

This doesn't really scream "postcard" to me, I'm afraid. I realize a postcard could really be any subject, but it just seems like a flower shot shoehorned into another challenge.

DNMC - What is this a postcard for?

I get the feeling that you didn't really understand what the challenge was about? This doesn't qualify at all as a postcard. Have a look at the other entries and you will see this immediately.

Looking at the image away from the challenge criteria, sadly it is rather blurred, the background is distracting (try a wider aperture to blur your backgrounds more) and the central composition is rather dull.

Lovely shot. Not much of a postcard though.

The photo lacks focus. You could have made the colors jump out more also. Some text on the photo may have helped as well. If the rose were more sharp this would score higher.

I'm just not sure what this would convey from a "postcard" perspective. It's a decent shot, but just not something I would think of purchasing. It has a depressing feel to it with the dead stalk and the drooping pink rose. Score: 4.

I'm giving this one a 10. I see it as a tribute to Andi's daughter Rose. PM me after the challenge if you don't know what I'm talking about. The photo is nice and although I'm not sure what its a postcard for or from, it evokes emotion for me and that's why its getting a 10.

OOF and I don't think this is in the right cahllenge, or maybe it is and I don't understand why it's a postcard or where it wants me to GO
