If you look at this image, you can see clearly defined gridlines. The image "grid" seems to be roughly thirds up the photo and maybe quarters across it, and each grid square appears sub-divided into smaller and smaller squares.

What causes this? Is my camera at fault or is this normal "noise"?

For reference, this is a photo I took outside at night, (the white bit being the moonglow) highly exaggerated by turning the contrast way up, but otherwise pretty much SOOC.

I tried to replicate the photo by taking shots with the lens cap on, but they do not produce quite the same extent of lines, the noise is somewhat more random (though some degree of gridding still exists).

I also tried to replicate this by just taking darkish shots, and that does show the gridding, but the outdoor night shot is the best example.
