Peanutbutter Icing

CRITIQUE CLUB
by karmat

I think the composition of this shot is pretty close to "perfect." There is nothing major that I would change. It is well balanced, and does a good job at controlling the eyes and their movement within the picture.

I like the contrasting colors, and the balance between the red and green. The icing on the cake disappears into the glass of milk, though, and that is mildly distracting. Perhaps a sharper focus on the cake itself, and sitting the milk further back so that it blurs a little.

To me, the shot is slightly out of focus; not much, but enough that it makes me want to squint and make sure it is the picture and not my eyes -- it is that close.

Nicely done.

Got the color and detail an both the cake and berries just right; the milk glass breaks up the background without distracting from the main subjects.

This looks really great except for the milk in the background. That looks really washed out. You might have wanted it that way but it seems that the white of the plate and the milk are really not very clear at all.

Looks tasty and appetizing! Your composition is great. My only criticism (and it's not much of one) is that the focus is a little soft.

I would like to see the milk (?) glass complete anyway, very good close up.

I would have rated this a bit higher if it was in focus a bit better. Shot is great and the red strawberries really help the composition. Looks delightful.

hehehe, your title made me think of that old 70's song and it sure wasn't about chocolate cake with strawberries, LOL! You have hit upon two of my favorite foods so that alone earns you extra points, :) THe shot itself is well done, outside, the green back drop is perfect, the tall glass of milk to help wash it all down, the only thing missing is............................the fork! How am I supposed to eat this? *sniff* The light seems a shade off for me, just a bit dark but otherwise a wonderful overall photo. An 8

Good pic, but I find the white portion of the background distracting. I would have tried a solid color background.

Nice colours. Focus is soft though.

Looks delicious! Looks like it may need a little USM, though.

Gets a 10 even though I think you needed a front spot on just the cake to hightlight the texture. You have made a texture shot with the strawberries and some more 'grain' on the cake would have helped balance it. Gee, that's a nice picture !

Absolutely mouth watering !!! I would personally have prefered the shot to be taken slightly elavated or have cropped off tha bottom part of the crockery, Beautiful strawberries and great colour balances - cant wait to see the recipe for this one.

Mmmm cake. Great color coordination. Presentation and lighting is good. I think that's a glass of milk in the background - would've preferred it to be completely visible or have the level lower (visible in the photo) so you could be sure it was milk. Everything looks fresh and delicious! Borders might look better a bit thinner, not a huge issue though. 8

Nice shot. Only thing I would have tried to change would be to make the frosting on the cake level with the plate. (a piece closer to the center of the cake?) Oh and I would have liked a touch more DOF to get a little detail in the milk glass. Did you paint the berries to get more shine?

Good volume placement in this composition. If you brush your fruits with a little oil they will appear much fresher on the picture.

Beautifully composed with wonderful attention to background. Great colours. Very appetising. Biggest strawb doesn't seem quite sharp though.

I would have liked this more if it was against an all green background. The White is somewhat distracting. 7.
