Challenge: Portrait in Landscape Orientation (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Nikon D50
Lens: Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
Location: My basement
Date: Oct 28, 2006
Aperture: f/1.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/60
Galleries: Black and White, Self Portrait
Date Uploaded: Oct 31, 2006

Being without any other options for models, I did a self-portrait. This was tough, beyond the normal difficulties of posing and composing at the same time, because one reason I took up photography was to control which side of the camera I was on. Since I'm self-conscious, I went with the harsh lighting to obscure my face.

Simple lighting setup, with only one incandescent bulb. PP involved a soft-focus action (two duplicated layers with Gaussian blur, one in darken mode, one lighten), a channel mixer layer to make the black and white, a levels layer, and Smart Sharpen.

Nice shot. I think there is a bit much soft focus, but at least at obviously intentional to the average voter that way. =)

too soft and processed for my taste.

I like the soft tones on the subject and the interplay of light and shadows.

I like the soft focus and use of negative space

Great soft focus and crop/frame. Thin white border might make it look even nicer I think???? Nice photo regardless.

seems like way too much neat image ... no texture left in the skin ... I like the composition though ...

strong composition, toning...all very effective, feels too soft for my taste...draws away from the emotional pull, makes it feel manipulative...
still a strong portrait...

I like the contrast, lighting and pose. However, I am not sure what the Landscape format gives you but dead space...
