Challenge: Faceless Portrait (Advanced Editing IV)
Collection: Challenges 2006
Camera: Canon EOS-30D
Lens: Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Location: Home
Date: Oct 6, 2006
Aperture: f/5.0
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/40
Date Uploaded: Oct 8, 2006

The camera is sitting on the floor in a room completely emptied in preparation for moving. The light you see through the door is the kitchen window clear the heck across the house. This is cropped, but it's the foreground that's cropped - I didn't intend to cut my head off in the shot, but did so anyway. I suspect this won't do well, but I really rather like it, so in it goes.

Post - used the standard JPEG: cropped; did a wee bit of burning to enhance the shadows already present; added a layer of gaussian blur in multiply mode (with thanks to Andy [awpollard] for sharing the tip) then reduced the opacity of that layer; desaturated; cropped again; converted to grayscale; duotoned with one of the gray/black duotones which I tweaked a bit; converted back to RGB, sharpened, resized, saved for web.

Wow, just ran across this. I love it!!! I love the mystery of no head! Teh only thing I would say is that the socket is a litttttle distracting... might want to see it with that cloned out? Doesn't keep me from really liking the shot though. It's very moody and compelling.

Nicely decapitated ;o) I think you could start your very own trend!! Headless shots by Melethia! Expert in decapitations with a camera ;o) This image is nicely edited and after reading your description about this being just before you move it adds another more emotional aspect to the overall image :o)

So that was you! How can you be so nonchalant with a major move just around the corner? Love the tones and focus.

For the processing should have finished higher, maybe the slight out of focus cost, the trolls can't tell the difference.

Completely agree with Tim. I thought this was a wonderful piece. The voting was an absolute travesty...

I liked this shot. The softness worked well withthe light and shadows. B&W was the way to go. The perspective was cool too. Underrated Deb. This should have scored higher.

Ahh yes the headless crop. Its an approach many people have taken to this challenge. In all but one or two cases the technique hasn't really worked.

You use perspective to get the whole door into the shot, which visually justifies the cropping off of the head, as does shooting from the floor. I wish the highlights inside the doorhole were... I dunno... something more mysterious. But the rest of the shot wins my confidence and I am still able to wonder about it fruitfully. 9

This is a very moody shot. It makes me think of someone waiting around anxiety to find out some new. I like the desaturation. Good Job.
