My 50 Days entry for 9/27/06.
A lot happened today. It was a busier day at work. I went to the dentist for a filling. And then Platte Canyon High School had a hostage situation that turned into a shooting with two dead, just down the road from us, and we spent most of our time after that watching one of our loan officers freak out because his sister-in-law is a teacher there, as well as the live video feed on one of the local news station websites. I got home and the novocaine was starting to hit my bloodstream and make me sleepy, so there was no daily photo and no prospects to shoot. I sat on the sofa and snapped a couple self-portraits to fulfill the bare minimum of my self-imposed project requirements.
The original photo was ridiculously craptastic - too dark, too noisy, too red, too much bad skin. Bad bad bad bad bad. The result you see is, in my opinion, a virtual post-processing miracle.
I know that the story doesn't really have much to do with the photo in the end, but it's hard to ignore a school shooting that happens in my own back yard. Do you know how many times I've driven by that school? How many customers I have who live in that tiny town? Last week their biggest worry was how much early snow they were getting. I informally dedicated this entry to those families, as I was thinking of them as I shot it and prepared it. This photo will always be, in my mind, linked to the day's events.
For reference, Columbine High School is only about thirty minutes away from Bailey. Many of the first-responders today were also first-responders there. |
