Taken on auto... beautiful day, all natural sunlight... these butterflies fly all over the beach all day and this one was nice enough to let me get close to her. I know the right tip of the wing is missing, but she flew away right after i got the shot

Post Processing:
adjusted levels
increased contrast +8
despeckled

Just trying to get close enough to the butterfly was hard enough, getting him to open like this took some patience. I just wanted to show the contrast of the bright butterfly against the light sand, and just capture the beauty of my favorite creature!!

4.9? Wow. A bit hammered on that.

Technicals: Focus is good. Lighting is good. Composition is good. Screw anybody who knicked you for cutting off the wing. It can be just as easily said that it provides the impression of the butterfly not being contained by frame and is ready to spring off the screen.

The feel/the game: I think the shot probably just didn't "wow" people in a 600 entry challenge. Note the 88 5s you got. That, to me, signifies people looking for literally 2-3 seconds and saying, "this picture isn't bad (so I can't give 4 or less), but it doesn't do too much for me (so I can't give 6 or more). 5". I sorta agree. The canvas is a bit stark, which isn't bad, but also doesn't hold our attention too long.

Sorry about the wing... i know it was disappointing... sometimes you just have to go with what you've got!!!

Thanks for the votes regardless!!!

Lovely shot of the monarch! FYI, this is a male (see the dark scales on the hind wings?)

Great clarity and colour here. The wing and shadow being clipped off to the right is a shame.

Would have been nice to get the entire butterfly.
