Casbahs were forts and, from waht I gathered, the forts were not only defensive strongholds, positioned where they could they could glimpse the approach of any invaders from a considerable distance, but they were frequently also self-contained communities, as was the case with the Casbah of the Oudiais in Rabat, Morocco. Now, it's narrow winding, streets with their blue and white, often beautifully decorated buildings are home to some foreign artists, as well as to native-born Moroccans. |
