Was in the suburbs for a party and went chasing butterflies in the garden. This is and Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. There were also Monarchs and a Black Swallowtail that were too damned fast to catch. I finally found some Monarchs to shoot that were feeding on clover growing on the adjacent farm.

I love the strong colors of the butterfly and the soft colors of the flowers. I framed it in camera with the wings on the diagnol for a strong composition. I probably should have opened the DOF a bit. The tails might get me some grief for being OOF.

I'm not happy with the greens they don't match the greens in Photoshop. They're not as vibrant. Gr...

Critique Club Review:

Focus is very good, depth of field suffers where you have already noted at the tails. Good separation between the subject and the background.

Subject is a little bit centered, but not a critical problem. i like the overall composition.

Color saturation and hue are done very well. Brightness is good, but a little brighter wouldn't hurt. Contrast is good.

There does appear to be a halo along the butterfly's right antenna. Looks like overprocessing, but could be a jpeg artifact.

Overall a nice picture with good colors. Could see it hanging on my wall.

Another nice butterfly capture. Good colours, maybe needs a deeper dof.

Very nice shot, and one of the better butterfly shots I have seen in a while.
Minor sharpening halo, but easy enough to clean up. Well done.

Like the wing spread, wish it would of been a little more in focus.

That is a nice specimen swallowtail. They tend to get a little bedraggled at this end of the season.

This picture looks perfect to me... the complimentary colors, the shallow depth of field... it all works very well. 9.

When you get to the in focus part it's disappointing because of oversharpening.

Composition: 4 - Too centered for me, and the right wing comes a bit close to the edge of the frame.
Technical: 7 - Very nicely exposed with good vibrant colours and nice DoF too. The sharpness of the butterly is great.
Creativity: 5 - There isn't anything here for me that separates it from other butterfly shots. Perhaps a less traditional angle or more of a closeup would be better?
Appeal: 6 - A pleasing photo to look at but nothing sets it above the rest.

Overall Calculated Average Score: 5

I like the angle the butterfly is in. Love how your showing the plant he is on and the pastel colors in the background. This one is better than mine! ;)
