the grainy processing was exactly right for this picture, even if it cost you points. stick to your guns!

Nice photo, yes agree no one votes spiders highly, i think they are facinating creatures, and hard to photograph, specially the smaller ones.
I like the effect, would like to see the web version.
well done

Thanks! This was indeed helpful.

I tried smoothing out the background and it probably would have been more well-received, but I just didn't prefer it. I liked the "old science textbook" feel of the grain. But I definitely knew from the outset this wasn't going to grab the attention of many (maybe the attention of those who hate spiders, hehe) and I am incredibly pleased this scored over a 5.

Thank you all for your comments!

To explain my vote of a 4. I say this over and over but it means so much. Photography needs to communicate and entertain first and foremost. I think when people stop and say "Woah, that is cool"..or whatever..you win point right there.

So, when I came to your photo it just didn't grab my attention. Then, after looking at the technicals, it felt grainy, perhaps as a result of pushing an underexposure or too high an Iso fo the camera. It just subtracted the enjoyment factor from me.

Hope this helps some.
