The clarity and color of the flower jump off the screen in your picture. I also like the angle that you used to capture the flower. If you have control over your shutter, you may want to go with a lower number (not sure what camera chose for you) to decrease DOF. That would blur the background a bit to keep the focus on your flower. Cropping would also keep focus on your main subject. While your light was good, you may also want to try shooting at different times to see what the light does for color. Also, softer light (clouds) may bring out some more detail in the petals.

Jeanne,

A great score considering how tough the competition is in a free study challenge. I encourage you to revisit this image and play around with different crops. The center of this flower is exceptional and with the right crop can become a star feature. One crop I would suggest is to put the center section of the flower at the lower right rule of thirds node while removing the red portion of the background on the left edge of the image. This makes the flower appear very 3 dimensional and makes it pop out at the viewer. If you have trouble visualizing my suggestion, send me a PM and I'll post a thumbnail to my comment.

Nice colours, very clear. Seems a bit too centered and ordinary

Beautiful flower. The background needs to be more abstract (bokeh) so the flower stands out more. Try cropping off more on the right to see what affect you get.
