I hate to tell you this, but this woman is possibly a professional beggar. She is probably quite well off and sharfes her dividends with others in her troup. I have been to Rome many times and am of Italian descent and have spoken to my relatives many times and am told, bands of gypsies have expensive villas on the coast and use their children and elderly to gain funds. You see these people all over Rome. One such person was using a pin to torture her child under a blanket.

I was in Rome a year ago, but in my 2002 visit, I photographed what looks like this same woman near the Coloseum...will try and upload the shot when I can

The street beggars (and homeless) are, probably, the easiest and cheapest shots of the street photography. They are right there, in all their scrubbiness, usually don't mind or even notice others taking pictures of them, and the image is almost guaranteed to tickle the senses of the viewer. The impact of this photograph comes from the feeling of guilt of the viewer towards the street beggar. It does not come from the photographer's work.

I like the position of the beggar in a such a hunched over position, I find the the people a little distracting but I do think they add a nice element to the photo. The only other thing I wish is that you had a waited a slpit second longer so that the person was completely framed by the doorway.

very interesting!! i like the mystery of not being able to see her face. i think this shot would have been stronger without the people in the background though. perhaps crop them out??
