This was one of about thirty animals I surprised on a hike. All the others took off as I arrived.

He stuck around looking pretty confident. I think he was warning me not to come any closer.

He stood still for about ten minutes, allowing me to get some pretty good shots.

This shot makes me miss home. I now live in CA and all I see are mule tail deer and they just lack the majesty of the white tails.
This is a solid shot that perfectly showcases the defiant buck guarding his does. You were very fortunate to get so close ..they have been known to attack humans - glad you weren't :)
As others have stated, a bit of cloning would improve the composition, maybe sharpen a tad more but you might want to just leave it as you shot it .. memories are sometimes more important.
I really like that you caught the glint in his eye.

At first when I saw the thumbnail I though it was one of those targets that hunters put out in their yards. I like the lighting and the clarity. Colors are really nice. Maybe clone out the pole behind the head?

Very close up looking and clear shot. Too bad the others left. The pole is not good, but the rest of the image is fine with me. Good light for this. I guess you were quite excited to get this. I would be.
Does he have "buck teeth" or is that something he was eating?

It's a nice looking shot. Composition looks good. Colors are nice. However, two things really stick out. 1-the pole coming out of his head. 2-the branch near his backside. Both are kind of distracting. Overall, nice work.
