Great Shot! I like the smoke, fire and the lava effects, adds to the mystery of the composition. I vote the highest score possible “10” You should have taken a ribbon. Keep up the great work.

Hello from the Critique Club.

Where to start? First, between your forum thread and the comments pre and post voting, I wish I had this much information for all of the critiques I've had the pleasure to write. Second, it would be foolish for me to even think I could give any useful feedback on how to improve this image technically or aesthetically. You know what you wanted to do and you definitely executed your plan to the point it looks like an image from a music video.

So lets look at the scorecard. Five favorites, there isn't a photographer on this site that wouldn't kill for an image that earns 5 favorites. Placement, twenty-fifth place and 85th percentile, again both indicators that this image was very good. Score, 5.995, the histogram indicates that this is a low score compared to what the majority of people felt the image should place. Consider the fact that you had more 8's than 4's and more 7's than 5's. With those numbers this image should have scored somewhere between 6 and 7 or maybe in the 7's. So why wasn't your score higher? The 1's, 2's, and 3's out numbered your 9's and 10's and it takes two 9's or 10's for every 1 and 2 to average them out to a 7.

So what is my point here? Obviously this image hit the emotional button for many of the voters. For some it was the good button and for others, the bad. As a photographer being rated by photographers, this has to be the greatest compliment you could receive. For people to give a low score to an image that is so technically well done should be interpreted as a virtual 10 vote, as the emotionally impact was really high. In retrospect, this image won a blue ribbon; it just doesn’t show up on your profile page.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding this psychobabble critique.

Tim

Hey Judi, I saw your thread and decided to comment. First off, didn't vote, so I'm not going to compare this to anything but for it's own sake.

I'll play 'devils advocate' (bwahahahahaha, I kill me!) ahem.

Personally, I hate the title. But being a religious guy, you have to realize that Satan actually means something more to me than to others, and is not to be used lightly (by me. I only say that because I think others may consider this also, so it would be important to consider when entering here is all.

Be that as it may, I think you might have gotten too engrossed in the concept here and ignored some details. It's not a bad concept by any means, I think theres too much room around you, especially over your head to give impact. If the fire was still bigger and there were more swirling and dynamic patterns in the smoke this may have worked better with this framing. Should have been tighter cropped or framed IMO. The lighting is really great as always with you. I think having the smoke in front of you somewhat distracts the eyes and deadens some of the impact.

It's not "bad alien porn" (stupid comment IMO) but It's probably the least "tasteful" of your the more racey shots that you've done (not that I've seen everything I guess). I think this may be because some of the others were more a study of the human form, and this does seem more overtly sexual to me at least. I think it was on the edge of the line for some people. Maybe if you had the leather pants on instead of the leather panties? :P

Great shot, should have scored better. Maybe it is because you're so recognizable - some trolls seem to dislike you.

This is amazing, the way you overcame your fears to do this shot, hope the 31 trolls that voted -5 read your thead on your effort, deserved a higher finish.

Should of been a higher score. When I saw this photo during voting the first thing that came to mine, "this is Judi's shot". I was right. 7 from me.

This isn't really an area of photography I particularly like or know anything about but for me I like the fire and smoke and feel its well composed, I would maybe liked to have seen a little more of the 'persons' face or a bit better might on the face (MHO)

Is that 2nd hand smoke? Seriously, nice composition and good smoke. A little more fire would be helpful, but I wouldn't want to hurt the pretty model either. 7

Great shot. I envisioned something similar when I first saw the challenge, but somehow I couldn't talk my wife into helping...

Wow this is creepy! Love the way the fires' glow picks up the same tones in the model's hair. Love the green tinge to the smoke. Very Halloweenish!

Crazy outfit - like the smokey effects. Would like to see the subject slightly better lit such that she stands out a little more from her surrounds. 7

This is a hard shot for me as my eye wants to keep focusing on the woman and then the flames - it is like my eye does not know where to go. I would mark down for that, except this is such a creative shot that I simply cannot bring myself to do that. The contrasting green and red also seems harsh to my eye, but that actually helps me appreciate the mood of the shot. Overall, I like this and think it was a great idea that was nicely executed.

I know you!

Nice flair for the dramatic! Good use of the smoke as an element in the composition and creating a visual barrier to the "world below".

Bumping up to 8 after seeing all the other entries.

I like the concept but not the yellow/green lit smoke. I find it distracting since I want to look at your model (nice one too BTW) but my eyes keeps getting pulled to the left.

Ok. Too yellow for my tastes. I like the idea, but a hellish volcanic look would be more of an orange which you have in the foreground, but seems unbalanced in the image.

I'm guessing this one belongs to you Judi? I'm sure this shot will raise some eyebrows during voting hu? Great composition and it looks like the lighting was tough but for this challenge I feel that you pulled it off nicely. This shot really sets a mood in the viewer, again you've nailed the image perfectly. Great shot, good luck.
