Challenge: Fire II (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM
Location: my fireplace
Date: Aug 13, 2006
Aperture: 22
ISO: 1600 (oops!)
Shutter: 4 seconds
Date Uploaded: Aug 13, 2006

Used my fireplace for safety reason. I sprayed wd40 on a gas lighter and it made quite a flash.

The colors I got in camera raw my messing with the hue.

The shot was taken with a 6 stop ND filter and I was very supriced how easy it was to burn out the highlights then later on I found out the camera was set to 1600 iso. I only got 2 shots after changing to 100 iso because the lighter broke and it was too late to buy a new one.

CRITIQUE CLUB COMMENT:

A visually arresting photograph! The moment I opened the photo it had high score written all over it.

POST PROCESSING

The colors are incredible, great choice to adjust the hue and saturation in RAW. In a "Fire" challenge the obvious colors are reds and yellows and your choice of purple tones really sets this apart. It's a gamble for you to do this but it really paid off. Excellent use of dodge and burn..it really makes the colors pop.

IMAGE QUALITY

The image quality is sharp and crisp...very clean. I love it.

COMPOSITION

The composition of the photo is good. The dark space above is ALMOST a bit too much in my opinion but in this case I think it's fine. I'm a little distracted by the lower left corner with the bright spot on the ground. My eye keeps going there to try and figure out what it is and that's bothering me.

SUBJECT CHOICE

My biggest gripe, if any, is that I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at and that distracts me. The colors are incredible and standing back I have to say I like the image but then I keep getting bothered by "what is it?" The other drawback is that I'm not sure this picture demonstrates "fire" all that well. Because I can't tell what I'm really looking at I'm having a hard time seeing the "fire" aspect. You could have lost some points in the voting from those who thought you weren't really meeting the challenge. Obviously this didn't hurt you a lot as you scored very high.

Over all an outstanding shot. Congratulations.

A very impressive image. Its only drawback being that it is too artistic for general viewing. You have my highest accolades. Congratulations on your top 20 finish.

Wow, this purple shot in a sea of reds and oranges is pretty nifty. Plus I really love the "surreal" or abstract nature of it. I keep wanting to figure out if that's a hand in the bottle-shaped ice in the middle. That's a bit distracting to me visually, but is interesting to look at.

Technically the only thing I notice is the gray area to the left of the middle ice piece. Looks like you played around with colors and had to desaturate one that was not working. I wouldn't vote down for the "is that a hand" thing - even though distracting, this IS after all understood to be surreal - but I do feel I have to mark down a tiny bit for the gray. It just detracts too much, unfortunately.

But with the beautiful purple swirls and beautifully arranged ice on top of a nicely done background, the visual impact was such that this is definitely one of my favorites. So don't get me wrong about the "marking down" bit... this still got a great score from me.

Looks like aurora borealis! I do think the composition is a bit chaotic and there's a little too much negative space at the top. But I like the color and the concept quite a bit.

Not quite sure how you did this, but the colors of the flames are amazing, and certainly surreal. Hope this does real well for you!
