That was shot waaaaayyyy before the digital/Photoshop revolution. 1988 I belive.

We called the technique "A moon in the freezer"

It was shot with a Nikon F3. On a clear night I photographed the moon on a roll of Kodachrome25 (man, those were the days!), all 36 frames, using a 300MM lens. When I loaded the camera, manual in those days, I marked where the teeth came through the sprokets. I also photograhed the moon in relatively the same position in the frame each time. I shot some vertical and some horizontal.

Once the roll was shot, I rewound the film leaving the film leader out of the canister. Then the film was placed in the freezer until needed.

On another clear night, I reloaded the film in the camera in precisely the same place. Then shot the downtown Houston scene, leaving room for the moon shot months earlier.

The result is what you see.

These photo tricks used be a lot harder!

And yes, I now feel really old!

Thanks for the story! It's a great shot, too. Err ... great couple of shots. :)

Is it a cut and paste or a lucky shot? :-)
