Shot in the Logan UT cemetery near dusk. I had been thinking about the challenge all day, but was still undecided when I began considering the price of freedom, and the sacrifices of those gone before who fought for our freedom. My grandfather was one of those, but he is buried more than 75 miles from where I live, so I settled for the headstone of an unknown stranger.

In many ways, I think that this is even more appropriate, since we may never know the names of more than one or two individuals who laid down their lives, in this case, more than 70 years ago.

Technical:
Minor crop from the bottom of the shot to eliminate some extraneous shadowing caused by a nearby headstone. All lighting is natural, with auto color balance and no exposure compensation. The saturation was not increased, but I did completely desaturate the blue channel to remove the emphasis on the bright sky, and direct attention back to the stone. While I could do nothing about the powerlines in the background, desaturating the sky made them less obvious. Final step was a single pass of USM at 200%/0.8/15. I may get marked down for what look like dust spots on the headstone-- these are actually dried blades of grass left from a lawnmower. Try as I may, they were pretty firmly attached to the marble surface. Outside of DPC, I plan to edit out both the spots and powerlines.

The lighting in this photo isn't that great and the tombstone appears fuzzy. The angle is good though.

A nice shot. A border may have increased the drama of this photo though. I like the way shadows and darkness were used in the photo. Overall one of the best of this photo done!

The lighting of the monument is really spooky. It make the piece very dramatic and moody. It really gives you a sense of the texture (what its made out of)of monument itself. Feels really smooth.
The darkened background really helps to push the monument forward and pop out of the picture.

Good concept, pretty well executed. I like the use of negative space here to enhance the drama of the stone.

I enjoy the lighting on this photo. The shadow on the base underneath the metal sign is distracting. Something was partially blocking your light source (headlights?).

In topic but for me the uneven light of the tombstone could be improved.

Yes, many paid a great price for our freedom! I'm so thankful. Good concept here. A little dark but appropriately so.
