The field of this picture that's in focus should definitely encompass the entire leaf. I think it would look much cooler with the leaf in focus and the chain fading out of focus into the background.

R U sure it is a maple leaf? I like the leaf, but not the table on which it sits. 4 sjgleah

Very pretty!

that's an interesting idea. leaves are an obvious choice for this challenge, but gold makes it different. so, while i like the idea, i'm not too sure about the exectuion. the highlights on the gold (and i know jewelry is hard to photograph) are distracting, i think an indirect lightsource would help there. i'm also guessing that you photographed the leaf on the wood table to add more texture? i just don't think it's the best background to show the gold off (use black) and if you do use the wood grain, try and find a spot that's evenly 'grained', there's a joint running to the right of the pendant. -- gr8photos (4)

For those that are just learning, like me.

Composition: Scoring in this area is based on basic composition of a picture and includes the rule of thirds, balance, cropping, and curved and diagonal lines. Subject matter that does not lend itself to the picture or otherwise unwanted is also considered here.

Originality: Scoring in this area is based on pictures or concepts that I have seen, as well as how much effort you have invested in the picture. Usually a little something that sets it aside from a snapshot. Does it make me want to come back for another look? You know things like that.

Technical Aspects: Focus, exposure, lighting, and other special effects (done by the camera), and post processing are all considered in this category.

Meets Challenge: This is based on my interpretation of if you, have/have not, met the challenge. This is fairly simple but quite important for this site.

There are many sites that can give you assistance in achieving better skills in photography, but I think the best way to learn is to take pictures and show them to other people. Believe me when it is a good one you will know it.

Good luck!

The lighting on the tip of the leaf and the right of the chain is a bit too bright for me. I think the shot would have been better off of a table surface - perhaps hanging from a tree instead - as it is now the shot is a bit too flat for my taste = 4

The picture is pretty good, maybe a little light on the focus, but your angle of attack and a macro shot combined often have a limited focal range. Probably not the only one....... but THAT is not a maple leaf. Alder or Popular, maybe, look up the Canadian Flag, it's a great example. A flatter angle of attack would have been easier to obtain a good focus of this subject, but less interesting, choose your poison. I started with a 6, I'm going to stick with it, even though I almost talked myself down another notch or two. 6 Swash
(Oh, yeah, the flash on the tip of the leaf, not so good, score unchanged.)

hmm, that's not maple...but it's nice :)

I feel it is off center, is this what you were looking for, really good pic otherwise.

though the surface also shows a form of texture, I believe, I think this subject would be better done on a solid colored surface - like black. I think that would highlight the textures of the leaf, and not detract from it by providing another pattern to look at. karmat

Would work better on a different background. Black silk maybe

Nice subject and decent composition. I do have some suggestions that might improve this. I find the background too distracting and not contrasting enough with the subject. I sussest a solid color or white. The chain could wrap around and remain in the fram as another graphical element. The focus could be sharpened with some unsharp mask and could look better if the foreground were in focus. Either let the background go blurry or use a higher f/stop to increase the depth of field.

Neat looking leaf, however, your choice of backgrounds could have been improved in my opinion. *5* -balynch

Perhaps the leaf's best possitions is a litle bit more to the lower-right corner.
